Today’s devotional reading is from Philippians 4:19:
“But my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches and glory by Christ Jesus.â€
God has promised to provide for all our needs, not according to our riches; that is, according to our fullness, but according to His. The Bible says that the earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof. All things have been put under His feet; therefore all things are His, both of this world and the world to come. God is rich beyond belief.
We must remember, however, that He has promised to supply all of our needs, not all our wants. Genesis 28:20-21 tells us what our needs are:
“And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, So that I come again to my father’s home in peace; then shall the Lord be my God.â€
This is God’s promise:
- To stay with us (to never leave us)
- To keep us (to guide us)
- To feed us
- To clothe us
- To bring us home in peace (to shelter and protect us)
Companionship, guidance, food, clothing, shelter, and protection; these are our needs. Out of His grace, He often provides more than this, but His promise is to provide for our needs. Everything above this is grace.Â
So as we see the economy failing and unemployment rising, we may wonder where our next meal is coming from, but we need not worry if we will eat. God keeps His promises. We have only to remember them.
